Residents of Boige-Ekona village in South Mugirango constituency have appealed to the government to provide area schools with lightning arresters to protect their children.
Their pleas come after two children from Rionsata Primary School narrowly escaped death by lightning as they played last evening.
“The lightning bolt electrocuted a cow traumatizing the children who were playing nearby. They were rushed to a nearby private hospital and later discharged,” said James Omoke, a teacher.
Omoke said that primary schools that need to be fitted with the arresters include Nyamagena Mabariri, Nyabine DEB and Nyatwoni.
He also appealed to area MP and MCA Sylivanus Osoro and Felix Ombati respectively, to renovate and improve facilities in the schools.
Job Ochari, a church elder, lamented that the heavy rains have destroyed maize, sugarcane, coffee and tea plantations.
He cautioned parents against leaving their children unguarded during this time when rivers have flooded.
“Let our parents and teachers ensure that our children are safe from flooding rivers by escorting them to and from school,” he said.
