3,800 varsity, college students in Thika benefit from bursaries

Some 3,800 university and college students in Thika Constituency, Kiambu County have received Ksh18 million in form of bursaries.

The funds which were released by the area National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) comes as a relief to the cash-strained students and parents as tough economic times continue to bite across the country.

Thika Technical Training Institute students received a lion’s share of the bursaries amounting to Ksh 2.5 million followed by students from Mount Kenya University (MKU).

The area MP Alice Ng’ang’a while speaking during the issuance of the bursaries recently revealed that 500 students from (TTTI) received funds amounting to Ksh2.5 million due to the high student population at the national technical institute.

“We have a very high student population in Thika Technical Training Institute and this is the reason why the students received the highest share of the bursaries,” she said.

The lawmaker noted that her office has laid down proper plans that will see the amount issued to higher learning institutions increased as well as benefit more needy students from the region.

She rooted for creation of awareness on the benefits of the current higher education funding model to parents and other stakeholders saying that more money has been pumped to higher education under the new model.

The lawmaker divulged that funds for construction of more Junior Secondary Schools(JSS) have been disbursed noting that currently the projects are in the procurement stage.
