Girl rescued from mother who wanted to smuggle her to Qatar

Gucha Sub-County Director of Education David Oyoko has rescued a Form 3 girl who was on the brink of being snatched from school to go to work in Qatar.

The girl has been brought up and taken to school by well-wishers after the parents were estranged and separated.

Yet recently, the mother reappeared on pretext that she was taking her to a different school on transfer. The teachers who had volunteered to take care of her education were alarmed by the move, advising the principal not to sign the transfer forms.

After close examination, the director discovered that the woman was an agent of a foreign employment company, which wanted girls to go to Qatar to work as house keepers.

“I sent for the police to arrest her but she sensed danger and ran away before they came for her,” Oyoko said, appealing to school principals to be wary of people who pretend to be parents or guardians but mean no good for the children in real sense.

He asked Boards of Management of schools to employ qualified watchmen who can detect any strange behaviour before allowing entry of strangers into the school.

Warning that the country’s laws will not hesitate to punish those who molest children, he said minors’ rights must be safeguarded by all responsible adults.
