The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called for swift rehabilitation of schools that are yet to reopen for learning to resume.
Secretary General Collins Oyuu said the continued closure of the schools would disadvantage learners hence the need for urgent action.
Speaking in Kericho, Oyuu, said although schools reopened on Monday, some institutions are still not safe for learning to take place.
“The schools are suffering and we have over 1,600 schools that are yet to reopen. We want the problems facing the schools, which include infrastructure damage and schools being marooned are addressed,” he said.

He noted that parents have raised questions on why some schools remain closed but noted that safety was a priority.
Oyuu challenged Members of Parliament from the affected areas to use funds from the National Government Constituency Development Fund for the rehabilitation.
“Away from the CDF money, I think we should go an extra mile even ask well-wishers to come forward and assist. The infrastructure funds from the Ministry of Education, has found its proper use. I want Education CS to ensure repairs of these institutions using the same funds,” added Oyuu.
The Union welcomed the reopening of schools, and further told the Ministry to direct infrastructure funds for the rehabilitation, saying no child should miss learning whatsoever.
