The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been told not to victimize any Junior Secondary School (JSS) teacher who participated in today’s nationwide demonstrations.
Speaking while presenting their petition to the Commission’s Secretary and Chief Executive Officer Dr Nancy Macharia through the TSC Nandi County Director, Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Nandi Executive Secretary Paul Rotich said that the demonstrations are meant to push for permanent and pensionable terms as per the recent court ruling.
“Following the Employment and Labour (Relations) Court judgment by Hon. Justice Ongaya on legality of internship and Teachers Service Commission, we appeal that the TSC immediately employs the interns on Permanent and Pensionable terms,” said Rotich in their petition to TSC.
He also stated that the commission should withdraw its appeal of the case and fully compensate the teachers.
“We also expect the TSC to withdraw the appeal and pay the differences between the salaries they receive as interns and salaries of teachers on Permanent and Pensionable (terms). No JSS teacher engaging in this agitation should be intimidated or victimized,” added Rotich.
JSS teachers through their various branches of KUPPET today held nationwide demonstrations demanding TSC to confirm them to permanent jobs and withdraw its appeal case after the Employment and Labour Relations Court declared internship employment by TSC illegal.
