Kitale Catholics lead learners in tree planting in West Pokot

The recent launching of tree planting in learning institutions in West Pokot County is a major boost in conserving the environment and the water towers.

The tree planting which was the first of its kind in the county was sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Kitale and took place at St Michael Primary School in Chepareria.

St Michael’s Primary School teachers, learners and parents led by the school head teacher madam Moureen Magavi and the BoM chairperson Philemon Rionosia planted more than 1,000 tree seedlings in the school compound.

“I am very much delighted and appreciate Bishop Henry Juma Odonya for choosing our school as a case study for tree planting activity,” said madam Magavi.

The school was also joined by St Mary Assumption Catholic Primary School in the same activity. Teachers and learners from the school were led by Gilbert Situma, the head teacher.

Mr. William Petot County Executive Committee  Member for Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change in West Pokot County Government asked all the learning institutions in the county to collect tree seedlings from his ministry.

Madam Delphine Wachiye, the Education Secretary at the Catholic Diocese of Kitale headquarters said  that it is important to involve learners in tree planting exercise as early as possible as this will make them good citizens in conserving the environment.

Edward Shibanda the bishop’s representative said that the Diocese wishes a million trees to be planted each year. He also asked the residents to utilize the tree nursery located at St. Charles Lwanga Catholic Church Kapenguria.

“Trees beautify the environment, conserve the soil act as water catchment areas and a source of rainfall apart from the many benefits they provide to the human beings and animals,” Shibanda said.

Raphael Magal, the official in the ministry of Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change said that it’s the responsibility of each resident in west Pokot County to plant trees, take care and conserve the water towers which are a major source of water
