Union demands action against police for attack on public health officer

Kakamega public health officers want protest violence on their colleague by police officer recently.

The Kenya Environmental Health and Public Health Practitioners Union Secretary General Brown Ashira has asked Inspector General of Police to take action on the police officers who injured public health intern with tear gas canistans during protests held recently.

Speaking in Kakamega SG in company of public health officers said will ensure interns are paid for there is a problem with employment.

The Union appealed to Government to employ 20, 000 health care workers with 10, 000 filling the position of public health officers.

Public health officers said that Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) risk allowance has not been paid since 2013 asking the commission to pay their allowances.

Governor Fernandes Barasa of Kakamega was asked to employ and replace those who retired and also those who died in the county.

Cynthia Awino, a public health officer said he can’t survive without a union and is unhappy that she is unemployed but well qualified.

She said all interns are specialized in food science, occupational health and therapists and other public health courses.

“All public health officers are professionals with abilities thus from today the department of health should be taken serious,” Awino said.
