The Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen, urges youth to pursue marine-related courses, emphasizing abundant opportunities abroad.
Speaking at the Kisumu Port, where he oversaw the graduation of 12 students from the Kisumu Marine Training College,he facilitated a memorandum of understanding between Kenya Utalii College and Kenya Railways.
Murkomen envisioned the Kisumu-based marine school as a regional hub, lamenting the untapped potential within Lake Victoria.
He saw the lake as a dormant giant capable of unlocking Western Kenya’s tourism potential if fully harnessed.
Launching the standards of training certification and watching for seafarers courses, Murkomen believed the Kisumu Port, when optimized, will not only catalyze Western Kenya’s development but also generate employment for the youth.
Accompanied by Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Matthew Owili, Murkomen stressed the importance of security for investment in Kisunu.
He affirmed the government’s commitment to nationwide development, with an emphasis on exploring the full potential of Lake Victoria as a strategic resource.
Key figures present included Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga, Kenya Utalii Chairman David Omusotsi, and Director of Kenya Railways Training Institute Milly Otieno.
