Teachers want two deductions for health insurance on payslips removed

Bungoma, branch Executive Secretary Kenneth Ng’ang’a

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Bungoma branch has asked the government to withdraw one teachers’ insurance scheme as it was meaningless to have two deductions.

Speaking to the press in Bungoma, branch Executive Secretary Kenneth Ng’ang’a said teachers are irrationally deducted on Minet and National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) schemes.

“The doubled deductions have become a burden to the teachers,” the unionist observed.

He, on the other hand, praised the government for employing additional 55,000 teachers, but was quick to point out that the county is still in dire need of 3,000 more.

He asked schools to adequately prepare candidates for both KCSE and KCPE exams.

“I plead with both students and teachers to work hard and maintain the name of Bungoma. Last year we produced the top KCPE candidate; we want it repeated this year,” he said.

Meanwhile, MPs from the county have required the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to ensure fairness in marking and awarding of marks in the two national exams.

Kanduyi MP John Makali fired the first shot, saying they do not want to see the problems experienced last year again.

“I’m asking KNEC to be fair to these students. Let them be given marks which they got and deserve,” Makali said.

His Kabuchai counterpart Majimbo Kalasinga said KNEC should not undermine the learners, teachers and parents’ efforts to get good results.

“We don’t want a marking system that will undermine our efforts the way we saw last year. These parents have invested heavily in them (children) and they want to see them enjoy the fruits of hard work,” Majimbo said, noting that a fair result should reflect the efforts put.
