50,000 teachers are set to be promoted by the end of the year, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced.

TSC Chairman Dr. Jamleck Muturi said that 50,000 interns have so far been recruited since this year after receiving Ksh1 billion and that the exercise started in March and will end in November.

Speaking to the press after meeting education stakeholders at St. Teresa Girls Secondary school in Kisumu, he said that some of the emerging issues from the meeting include staff shortage, mental issues and discipline among staff.

The Commission Chairperson assured them that the Commission will commit to finding solutions to the challenges they raised.

He said that finding solutions to the grievances will ensure children receive quality education because a satisfied teacher is well-positioned to meet learners’ needs.

Dr. Muturi noted there was a general shortage of teachers across the counties and said that they have already put measures to plug in the gap which will be rolled out in due time.

Regarding mental health, the TSC boss said that they have already come up with wellness centers and rehabs for affected staff.

He added that some of the affected staff have been given paid leave.

Others present during the forum were Kenya Secondary School Heads (KESSHA) Kisumu Chairman George Opiyo, KNUT Kisumu branch Executive Secretary David Obuon, his Kisumu West counterpart Gordon Olando and KEPSHA Kisumu Chairman Elly Ondiek.

School heads present included Duncan Owiyo (Kisumu Boys School) and Kennedy Oguta (Bishop Abiero Secondary School) among others.
