Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera has called for the hiring of more teachers in the Western region saying that the current shortage is hampering effective learning.
Speaking during the Bumula Education Day at St. Peters Siboti Secondary School, he faulted the narrative by some leaders claiming that the country has enough teachers.
“Those saying that the country has enough teachers are liars, teachers are still being overworked and the teachers to students ratio is not balanced. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) should move with speed and address this challenge,” he noted.
Nabii, who is a member of the National Assembly Education Committee, pointed out that Kakamega County needs 10,000 teachers.
“Why is it that our region produces the highest number of teachers yet we are the ones crying over teacher shortage?” he posed.
Speaking at the same event, Bungoma County TSC Director Wilson Koros lauded area teachers for working hard despite the challenges adding that the Commission is in the process of hiring more teachers.
Koros noted that Bungoma has a shortage of 3,958 teachers in secondary schools and 42 in primary sections
However, he said that TSC has hired 2,000 teachers in the 724 Junior Secondary Schools (JSSs) in the county.
“In March and May, the Commission hired 1,208 teachers to JSS in Bungoma County which was the highest in the country,” he said.
He promised that those who applied will be contacted for interviews soon and those who meet the qualifications will fill the vacant positions.
Koros decried the rising cases of school unrests in the county and urged teachers, leaders and parents to unite to find a permanent solution to curb the vice.
Also in attendance were Bumula MP Jack Wamboka and Industrialization PS Dr. Juma Mukhwana.
