The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) examiners for last year have started receiving their payments.
KNEC has announced that the 31,164 teachers who marked last year’s national examinations are having their bank accounts being credited with their dues.
The examination body’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Njengere on Wednesday said that National Treasury released had Ksh2 billion to facilitate payment of all the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examiners and other contracted officials.
“The Treasury gave us the money, Ksh2 billion, that was remaining to allow us to meet the balance.
We have paid everything as the President and Education Cabinet Secretary had promised.” Njengere said.
“We have also paid at least 89,910 KCSE supervisors and invigilators and every other person who participated in the exercise including 16, 585 security officers, drivers, clerks and Sub County exam officers,” he added.
The amount a teacher receives depends on the number of scripts a person marks but examiners have however been urging the Government to revise upwards the marking rates.
According to KNEC Chairperson Prof Julius Nyabundi, the Council found it impossible to have an extra budget to revise the rates midway since the issue of the examiner’s marking fee is an individual contract.
This comes after the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) recently warned that teachers would disrupt the national exams set for October and November if their 2022 exam dues were not settled.
