The Ministry of Education will hire more than 24,000 teachers to bridge the teacher shortage experienced across schools countrywide.

Speaking at the 46th Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Conference at Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu noted that the recruitment exercise will kick off at the beginning of the 2023/2024 Financial Year.

“In the outgoing Financial Year, we have employed 36,000 new teachers. In the next Financial Year, we will hire an additional 24,000 teachers. It is crucial that we deploy these teachers in our schools in a manner that reflects equity,” the CS said.

He said the Government is fully committed to ensure the education sector blossoms citing that the sector received the highest share of the new financial year’s budget, Ksh628.6 billion which translates to 29 per cent of the total budget.

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chairperson Jamleck Muturi announced that following Machogu’s directive, qualified teachers will be able to start applying for the positions on the week beginning Monday, July 3.

In an effort to curb teacher shortage in the country, Muturi disclosed that the government had set aside Ksh4.6 billion to hire interns.

Apart from recruiting teachers and interns, he revealed that the Commission had received Ksh1 billion for promotions.
