More than 135 students of Omonayo Secondary School in Nyamira County spent Friday night in the cold after their dormitory burnt to ashes.
According to the school principal, the fire started in the late hours of the evening causing students to raise alarm which attracted the attention of the villagers whose efforts to put out the inferno bore no fruits.
“We tried to fight the fire but it was too strong. By the time fire fighters arrived at the scene, it was already too late,” said the principal.
He thanked God that no student got hurt during the incident although all their belongings got burnt, adding thet the cause of the fire was yet to be established by the police who have begun investigations.
Area Education Officer Zachary Obara was among the first people who visited the school after the incident.
He asked the students to remain disciplined in order to succeed in their education because without it their lives will be ruined.
A few parents who reported at the school thanked the former Borabu Constituency MP Ben Momanyi who donated 100 blankets,100 bars of soap and 100 bundles of tissues paper to enable the affected students continue with their studies.
“We are happy with this quick action by the former Member of Parliament and appeal to other well-wishers to come on board and help us,” said Julius Nyarangi, a parent.
Efforts to reach Nyamira County Director of Education Zachary Mutuiri for comment were yet to be answered by the time of publishing this story.
The fire incident comes barely two weeks after Kiabonyoru Girls’ dormitory went up in flames whose cause remains mysterious.
Residents who talked to Education News called for quick investigations to establish the cause of the fire in the two incidences to help them stop similar incidences in the future.
