Bars operating near schools to receive ban, Deputy Governor says

Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi has called for business operators to desist from opening bars near schools.

Speaking in Machakos, Mwangangi said that children in schools need a conducive environment to learn, adding that the county government will monitor the joints closely.

Mwangangi spoke after holding a consultative meeting with liquor officials drawn from all the Sub-counties in a bid to familiarize themselves with the Liquor Act of 2014 and develop mechanisms for its rationalization in Machakos County.

The DG called for members of the public to report bars near schools so that the children can be protected from drugs and substance abuse.

“Community has a pivotal role in determining where entertainment joints are located because they stand to be affected by most of the decisions. No bars should be found near schools and even churches,” said Mwangangi.

His sentiments were seconded by CECM Trade, Innovation and Culture Sharon Mutula.

“Protecting schools from drugs and substance abuse is an important gesture that should be adopted by everyone. Children should never be exposed to alcohol, leave alone the resultant insolent behavior associated with its consumption,” she said.
