Baby under care of Class Eight pupil dies after drowning

An Eleven-month old baby died on Tuesday evening after drowning in a basin full of water in Mavindini, Mwala Sub-county of Machakos County.

The baby had been left in the care of his 13-year old sister while the mother was away.

According to a police report seen by Education News, the Class Eight girl left the toddler playing outside while she we­nt to the kitchen and on coming out she found the little boy unconscious in the water basin. Upon calling for help, efforts to save the little boy bore no fruits.

“Reported by one Juvenile aged 13-year, a pupil at Mumbuni Primary School and a resident of Mavindini village accompanied by area village manager, that she was left in custody of her brother namely Geoffrey Mutiso by her mother who is a casual laborer. At around 1800 hours she entered the kitchen leaving her brother playing outside and on coming back she found him in the basin,” read the report in part.

It further continues: “The girl retrieved the baby from the basin and took him to their grandmother who lives within the same compound. She tried to resuscitate the baby but all was in vain.”

Police arrived at the scene and moved the body of the baby to Yatta mortuary awaiting autopsy and further investigations.
