Kakamega Senator claims that some of the maize that is earmarked for destruction following illnesses at Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls had been stolen.
Dr. Bonny Khalwale, the senator, said police officers who were deployed to provide security at the school organized with a section of support staff to steal the maize.
“I have just been to Mukumu and I was shocked to find that some of the contaminated maize in the store is missing. When I inquired, some members of staff confided with me that the maize was stolen at night,” he claimed.
Speaking in Kakamega today, the senator gave names of the alleged police officers involved and said he was forwarding them to their County boss Joseph Kigen.
“One of the culprits operates an MPESA business at Khayega market,” he added.
Khalwale alleged that the maize was now being sold to unsuspecting members of the public at mainly Khayega and Musoli markets.
“I want to caution members of the public to be very vigilant when purchasing maize at Khayega and Musoli markets,” he added.
He further called for hurried destruction of the cereals as recommended by health experts.
He also called for arrest and prosecution of the suspects.
