Death toll rises as Mukumu Girls teacher succumbs to infection

Mukumu reopens reporting

Education and health stakeholders across the country are left in shock after the death toll of Kakamega Based School; Mukumu Girls High School rose to four after a teacher succumbed to what the medics at Eldoret described as organ failure.

The deceased, Julian Mujema, was an English Literature teacher at the institution and at the same time served as the boarding mistress.

“The chief complaint was unstable vital, multi-organ failure and bleeding from the vagina. When she came in she was in a very critical condition as she was losing a lot of blood and her blood pressure was very low as well,” Dr Rahul Koshek said, a doctor in charge of ICU at LifeCare Speciality Hospital.

Mujema was first admitted on April 2, 2023 and was treated at three different hospitals before being taken to LifeCare Hospital, according to the family.

The death of Mujema is similar to one of the Form Four students who passed away on Tuesday this week while receiving medical attention at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital as per the autopsy conducted by the hospital, the student died from multi-organ failure.

The institution still remains indefinitely closed after 500 other students were said to be infected.

At the same time, the Ministry of Health is yet to release findings from the Samples taken from the school.
