Pupils of Mundika Primary School in Busia County on Wednesday planted 350 tree seedlings to help in environmental conservation and to mitigate against climate change.
The seedlings were donated by the School Board of Management (BOM). It was presided over by environmentalist and Football Kenya Federation Matayos South coordinator, Paul Ngota.
The school BOM Chairman, Clement Wanjala said the tree planting exercise was in line with the Pope’s passion about climate change in his seven letters of Laudato Si.
This followed synodal church which entails communion, participation and mission; the Pope’s passionate plea to the world is to take care of our mother nature through environmental conservation.
The school for long, he noted missed to have trees necessitating them as BOM to take initiative. “Our MP Hon Geoffrey Odanga has pledged 1000 more seedlings to be delivered next week. We urge the county and national governments to avail more seedlings to learning institutions to help in environmental conservation.”
The school head, Charles Wandera said the intitiative will help pupils undertake studies and hold meetings under the shade. He appealed to well-wishers to help start a seedlings nursery at the school.
“Our target is to plant over 1000 trees during the current rain season especially in open spaces around the football pitch to generate more shade for football fans and officials,” adding that the planting season is in line with the President’s initiative.
The chairlady of Junior Secondary School, Getrude Chitechi Murunga urged pupils to take the knowledge they acquired of planting trees to their parents so that they can plants trees to help in environmental conservation.
Environmentalist, Paul Ngota who took the pupils on skills of planting and taking care of tree seedlings said it’s critical for Mundika Boys pupils to plant trees and conserve the envoronment, noting that the initiative will mitigate against climate change.
Teacher representing BOM, Jane Were said they will use all avenues to ensure that the trees flourish to bring satinity to environmental conservation at the school. PTA chairman, Julius Barasa said they heeded to the President’s decree to increase tree cover in the Country.
Standard six pupils, Evans Agwanza, Moses Otieno and Richard Wabwire said they are happy for the project which will help them address envrionmental challenges facing the school.
