Outgoing Nyamira County Commissioner, Michael Lesimam, has warned parents against leaving children by themselves after a three-month old toddler died in a fire incident after he was left in the house with young siblings.
According to the residents of Kiang’ende Village in Gachuba location, the mother left her three children in the house at midnight and went to help her neighbour who was in labour pains. On returning, she found her house engulfed in fire and the youngest child dead! The two who survived were rushed to Keumbu hospital.
The body was taken to Gucha Mortuary Hospital for autopsy and police investigation.
Acting Area Chief, Moses Onsare, confirmed the incident and said that the two survivors included a Grade Four boy who suffered severe burns on the back, neck and ribs.
He asked parents not to leave their children alone because it exposed them to many dangers like kidnappings and defilement.
The outgoing Commissioner was speaking during the handing over exercise to his incoming successor Onesmus Chata who came in from Mandera County.
He briefed his successor about the rampant cases of child abuse in the area and attributed them to a few wayward people.
The administrator mentioned the brutal killing of the Principal of Rangenya Girls’ Secondary and a primary school head teacher, the late Ezekiel Getangwa, who was allegedly murdered over involvement in love triangle, saying they are ugly incidents which can be avoided.
“Such ugly incidences interfere with the smooth running of schools but we hope the public will cooperate with the security teams to eliminate them,” he said.
On his part Onesmus thanked his predecessor and the residents for the cordial reception and expressed optimism of working harmoniously with the residents in the provision of security services.
“I have been working with people like you and I hope we shall do good work together,” he remarked.
The Commissioner said that there was nothing impossible to accomplishing as he highlighted a few strategies he will put in place for sustainable security in the area and appealed to the residents to exhibit patriotism of their county.
