With about 30,000 learners out of 1.2 million candidates who sat grade six exams last year unaccounted for, an Italian hotelier in Kilifi has gone out of his way to build a JSS classroom in Jacaranda Beach Primary school in Watamu.
The Malindi based Italian investor Pasquale Tirito who owns several tourist Resorts in Jacaranda area in Watamu has offered to build an inclusive block in jacaranda JSS.
As social corporate responsibility, the hotelier decided to ease the poor resident’s the burden of constructing the multipurpose block in jacaranda Junior Secondary School.
According to Jacaranda JSS School’s deputy head teacher John Machoki, the school’s grade seven had 38 learners. This was despite the fact that the JSS had no existing classroom.
“Interestingly, the hotelier helped build this community school in 2010 and the construction of the building will go a long way not only making it easy for learners to get education but will give the parents jobs in construction etc,’’ said the deputy head teacher.
Tirito who has been supporting education in Kilifi built Jacaranda Beach Primary School and handed it over to the government for the locals to benefit.
He recalled a few months ago, the community approached him and requested he helps them build the JSS classroom as the students were using the primary school classes in order to access education.
Tirito said once the JSS block and all facilities including laboratories are complete and promised that he will build a dispensary to enable the community access health easily.
“This is a continuation of the project from the primary school and now we are starting the JSS because the community asked me, I did not do the school project because it’s me,’’ said Tirito who is the Chairman of Jacaranda Beach Resort .
He added the project will include three classrooms, toilets, for both boys and girls and teachers and laboratories together with all that is required by the government.
Promising that his administration will continue to support the community projects he called on the government to compete the road tarmacking and ensure there are street lights along the area
Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony Tirito said the project will be complete in three months’ time after which the plans for the construction for the dispensary will kick off .
