The largest clan in Western region’s Kabras community – Abashu – has launched an education fund to cater for needy and bright students.
The setting up of the fund has been termed as a huge milestone and is set to improve literacy levels and produce professionals who will in turn uplift living standards in the area.
Speaking during the second Abashu Cultural Festival held at Kalenda grounds in Mugai Shirugu ward, the outgoing Secretary Pastor Moses Luvonga expressed his joy for the teaming up of the kinsmen to support education development.
Pastor Luvonga said that with the programme in place, they will be able to educate youngsters on matters heritage and culture which seem to be fading due to the embracing of Western culture.
Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kakamega North Executive Secretary Shadrack Tovoko stated that there was need for professionals in the education sector among the clan’s sub tribes – Vangotse, Chisambo and Chivolo – to consolidate efforts and assist area students to further their education.
“We have professionals in the education sector who have all it takes to assist our students on matters education but since we are divided on the basis of sub tribes, we view each other as outsiders. It is time we sort out our differences for the sake of our children,” he said.
West Kabras ward MCA David Ndakwa blamed poor performance of schools in national examinations to poor leadership and urged his counterparts to be at the forefront at developing education sectors in their wards through improving infrastructure and initiating projects in schools.
“We are leaders admiring to produce one of our own to lead in various institutions and capacities but it will only be possible if we embrace education as it is only through an educated society that we can achieve prosperity and attain desired goals,” he said.
During the event, the Patron donated Ksh 20,000; Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula gave Ksh 20,000 while United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Cleophas Malala donated Ksh 100,000 to support the fund.
