Nyeri National Polytechnic has come up with a milk processing plant which is aimed at generating income as well as teaching the students lessons on dairy farming and improving milk production in the area.

The plant at the moment is processing 300 litres of milk in two hours and can operate for 24 hours according to Chief Principal David Mwangi.

He said the main objective of the plant is training students; make money and also training farmers on milk handling.

Mwangi added that the plant will be open for hiring to people who want to make different products.

“The plant is available for people to hire to make cheese, butter, yoghurt and fresh milk. We want to partner with investors so that, when they are making their products, we train our students and when they are not producing we make ours,” said Mwangi.

The plant came up as a result of Canada-Kenya Education for Employment programme covering 10 national polytechnics across the country funded at a cost of $50 million which is equivalent to Shs6.4 billion. At the same time, Canada High Commissioner Christopher Thornly said the plant is part of efforts to eradicate poverty by training youths.
