A plan to recruit 1,300 trainers in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions is under way through the co-ordination of the National Government and the National Treasury. The plan will ensure that the institutions are going to receive a big share in the Financial Year 2023/24.

This is according to the Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu in a speech that was delivered by TVET Principal Secretary Dr. Esther Muoria during the inaugural graduation ceremony at the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic in Mombasa on Thursday. A sum of 1,811 students graduated at the ceremony.

“I am happy to inform you that the government will soon recruit 1,300 trainers to address the gap experienced in TVET institutions. The National Treasury has allocated funds in the 2023-2024 annual budget and vacancies will be advertised,” read the statement from the CS.

The revelations comes shortly after it was disclosed that the number of TVET institutions in the country increased to 238 as of 2021 up from the initial 52 TVET institutions back in 2013.

Out of the 238 institutions, 192 are operational while the remaining 46 are close to completion according to the data from the Ministry of Education.

At the same time, the CS urged the TVETs to work closely and partner with other top schools in the world.

Mombasa county TVET Director, Peter Mwangi, asked the state to help build roads and rentals to all the 17 TVET institution in the Coastal region.
