Varsity hopeful to offset debts as it harvests first batch of apples

Moi University yesterday began the inaugural harvesting of apples from its farm located in the main campus at Kesses.

The institution is set to earn close to Ksh 80 billion from the 1,000-acre venture which will help offset part of the institution’s debts to enable efficient running of its day-to-day activities.

The university pioneered large scale farming of the Wambugu Apple variety in 2021 to chiefly generate extra income for the institution and also to contribute to the national food security, nutrition and overall health.

It is estimated that 95 per cent of the apples consumed in the country are imported and thus the varsity looking to explore the niche.

Earlier during planting of the fruits, the varsity Council Chair Dr. Humphrey Kimani said that universities have to identify alternative income generation activities to help finance their programmes.

Present during the harvest was the Council led by Dr. Kimani, Mr. Christopher Khaemba, Prof. Clara Momanyi and the University Management Board led by Vice- Chancellor Prof. Isaac Sanga Kosgey.
