100 Kakamega varsity students awarded full scholarships

The County Government of Kakamega has partnered with the Africa Caribbean Continuing Education Society (Access-Kenya) to support education of bright and needy students in the county.

The partnership will benefit 100 students who will be given full university education sponsorship to pursue their dream courses.

Speaking during the partnership launch, Governor Fernandez Barasa said he will work hand in hand with Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to ensure that only deserving cases benefit from the scholarship.

“The programme will run for five years and will assist students from humble backgrounds to achieve their dreams. One hundred Form Four leavers with a mean grade of C+ and above will have an opportunity to benefit from full scholarship,” he said.

The governor said that the initiative is meant to ensure that bright students do not go to waste for lack of fees.

Access-Kenya Secretary Gerishom Wafula said the partnership was aimed at upping the level of support for university students benefiting from the programme.

“Ordinarily, we give students going for tertiary education around Ksh 40,000 and for university Ksh 20,000 annually. We realized that if university students are from poor backgrounds, then the amount may not be enough for a year and that is why we’re seeking a partnership with the county government so we can top-up this,” said Wafula.

He added that the organization had held meetings with the governor where they agreed that vetting would be done thoroughly to identify real cases that require support.

Wafula added that Access-Kenya had introduced support for Masters studies and was supporting three students so far.
