Panic for 500 Nyamira ECDE teachers as contracts expire

By Enock Okong’o

More than five hundred Early Childhood and Development Education (ECDE) teachers have appealed to the Nyamira county governor, Amos Nyaribo to employ them on permanent and pensionable terms.

The teachers said they had been employed under contractual terms since 2013 and were yet to be hired permanently despite their terms approaching the end on October 14th.

They claimed that they needed assurance from the government since they depended on the job to sustain their livelihood.

Led by Bochaberi Ngangarora and Annet Kerubo from Bomwagamo and Manga wards respectively, they had earlier aired their grievances but no feedback had been brought forth.

They briefed that during gubernatorial campaigns early this year, Governor Nyaribo promised to hire them permanently.

“He promised to confirm those under contract and employ more teachers to ease the heavy teaching load in the county,” said Mrs. Ngangarora.

The anxious teachers cited their counterparts from Kisii and Kisumu counties who had recently been hired permanently and asked their county to do the same.

Saying that ECDE teachers play a big role in the development of education in the country, they asked the county to remunerate them well in reciprocation for their good work.
