Inmates at the Kapenguria GK Prison are in dire need of equipment and teachers, a social welfare officer at the facility has said.

Mr. Simon Psengo, the Kapenguria GK Prison Social Welfare Officer, revealed that in the recent KCPE exam results, the inmates passed fairly well and expressed interest in pursuing their education.

“Since there is no failure among them, as prison authorities at Kapenguria GK prison, we are happy that our candidates tried their level best to score the marks that they got. The inmates will use their knowledge outside the prison to better their lives,” said Psengo.

Mr. Psengo appealed to the government to provide them with qualified and trained teachers. He also asked well-wishers to provide the prison with teaching and learning materials, enough course and reference books, as well as desks so that more students could benefit by enrolling.

“This will improve the standard of education of our inmates who will better their lives once they join their communities after finishing their sentences,” Psengo added.

Situated about a kilometre from where Mzee Jomo Kenyatta was jailed during the colonial period, four students registered for the KCPE and scored good marks.  Wanyama E. Saleh got 194, Ndiwa Edison Murita 178, Kokarion C. Poghisho 132 and Ijaka Erik Rotich scored109. They had sat the exams at Kitale GK Main Prison.
