Parents from Garissa High School are breathing a sigh of relief after expenses that were meant to renovate a dormitory burned down during the student unrest have been promised to be taken care of by Garissa Township MP Adan duale through the Constituency Emergency Fund.
Speaking at Garissa High School where he had attended a consultative meeting between education stakeholders and security officials, Duale, noted that the biting drought making unholy alliance with Coronavirus had rendered most pastoralists helpless.
“Given the hard economic time due to the local economy relying on livestock industry under the prevailing circumstances, we will use our meagre CDF resources to foot the bill,’’ said the former Parliamentary Majority Leader.
Duale who urged the detectives to thoroughly probe the school fires and ensure perpetrators are brought to book, said schools are serious investments for the future.
“In this respect those destroying schools are criminals who must be brought to book and punished,’’ said the MP.
The security team led by Garissa Deputy County Commissioner Jacob Ole Kipuiri noted that Garissa township had seen dormancies of Garissa High School and NEP Girls torched in November last year .
“Immediately the schools were reopened this year another hostel was torched in Garissa High School. This year, the only hostel in Bura Boarding Secondary School in Fafi also went through the baptism of fire,” he added.
Reacting to the sad scenario, the legislator said cases of arson targeting school property must stop.
“We cannot pretend things are okay when they are not. Something must be done to correct this menace in our schools, that must be fixed,’’ he reiterated.
The MP said if they are few students or subordinate staff, or whoever is behind the unfortunate incidences, let the right agencies investigate them and have them be brought to book, regretting that these learning institutions have taken ages and resources to build.
“Garissa High is the second oldest national schools after Wajir High School in the North-eastern region. It has produced high calibre human capital and professionals from the region. We cannot accept such mishaps to continue happening,’’ noted Duale.
