Kisii University Chaplain Fr. Lawrence Nyaanga has decried the high use of illicit brew by school children in Kisii town.
The Priest attributed the deviation of norm to the general laxity by parents to instill discipline and the law enforcement officers for letting the vice happen.
Fr. Nyaanga named the Kisii Prisons Offices and Jogoo estate as areas that engage the street children to peddle on illicit beer and other drugs like cannabis sativa.
He called on all stakeholders to move with speed to assist in the relocation of the street children from the town to their homes or a common place for rehabilitation.
“These are our children who need love and education to help them to be better in the future,” he said.
He wondered what happened to Kiamwasi Children Rehabilitation Centre that was initiated by the Kisii County government but has not started to function yet.
The Priest briefed that Kisii town has hosted many street children for a long time and that some of them had graduated into adulthood while still in the streets. These people, he added, have given birth to the young ones who have inherited street life.
“Unless this upcoming type of community is stopped, it will increase the lawlessness in the society. Time has come for every one of us to be involved practically instead of bare rhetoric,” he advised.
Responding on the issue, Kisii County Police Commissioner Francis Kooli said that his office had started special programmes to curb the menace.
“We are working closely with the county to address this teething problem,” he assured.
The officer said that the drug related cases in the country will be limited if the youth embraced self-discipline.
