Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) have all come under scathing attack from Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) for allegedly failing to provide service to teachers.
Speaking at City Primary School in Nairobi during the branch election, Secretary General Wilson Sossion told TSC and its Secretary Dr. Nancy Macharia to prepare for a battle immediately they complete the elections.
This is expected even to worsen the relationship between the Union and the teachers’ regulator, which the union accuses being behind the drastic drop of its membership to less than 50, 000 members currently.
Sossion dismissed KEWOTA and accused it of using teachers’ money without services and advised teachers to remain in Knut as it has good prospects ahead.
Former Nairobi Knut chairman Robert Karume said that teachers do not fight physically, and should initiate peace noting that Knut head office and its national executive committee had failed teachers and the matter cannot be blamed on Sossion alone.
Karume, who did not defend his seat since he is retiring next year, said that Knut needs enlightened leaders.
During the election the Branch Executive Secretary Danson Mugwe and treasurer Hannington Ochieng were elected unopposed as the former assistant executive secretary Nyamai Kasina was elected the branch’s new chairman.
Jane Ochwedo formally vice treasurer was elected women representative and Fredrick Odhiambo became the representative of teachers with disabilities. Others elected include the combative former Starehe BEC Alvans Odhiambo as assistant executive secretary, Regina Cherono the new vice treasurer and Stephen Maina became the new vice chairman.
The ordinary branch executive committee members elected were Stephan Nduta (Njiru), Richard Nyangweso (Starehe), Chrispin Olum (Makadara), Sammy Kosgei (Langata), George Ochieng’ (Westlands), Joseph Karuri (Dagoretti), Genald Mwathe (Kamukunji) and Kenneth Ngure (Embakasi).
