2 students in hospital, 4 dead over suspected food poisoning in Migori

Two secondary school students are among 13 patients who were admitted at various hospitals in Kuria West sub-county, Migori County over alleged food poisoning after bingeing on illicit brew.

According to Kuria West Sub County Police Commander Cleit Kimaiyo, it is suspected that the victims ate suspected poisonous food in one of their homes. After eating and drinking, the victims reportedly started complaining of severe heat in the body and diarrhoea.

He said that after being alerted, the police rushed to the homes in Kubweya and Kunguku village in Mabera location and assisted in the transportation of the victims to hospital.

They were admitted at Samjome Health Centre but four of them were in critical condition, prompting relatives and Police from Isebania Police Station to seek advanced medication at Migori County Referral Hospital where they were pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The police boss identified the deceased as Nyansengo Hiringo, 55, Mwita Samson Moto and David Marwa both aged 52 years old and Nwita Managwa, 45.

Kimaiyo disclosed that his offices collected a bottle with clear liquid from the scene and sent it to government laboratories in Kisumu for examination.

The bodies of the victims were taken to St. Kadiva Hospital Mortuary for postmortem and further investigations.

The Commander advised students to shun drug abuse citing their diverse adverse effects.
