Nyamira County Woman Representative-Elect Jerusah Momanyi has promised to promote the girl child’s education for steady development of education in the county.
Speaking to her supporters at Kebirigo High school after her re-election, she said that quality education to a girl sets the foundation for a progressive society.
“Women are great custodians of all families and therefore their welfare must be treasured,” she said.
She appealed to all residents to be at the forefront towards assisting the girl child occupy her rightful place in society by condemning ill traditions like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Jerusah decried the high rate of child abuse in the area and attributed it to ignorance.
She further promised to empower women groups by providing financial assistance to assist them stabilize economically.
“Most of our mothers are compelled by poverty to accept simple tokens from men who abuse our children to exonerate them from facing the law at the expense of the child, I will fill these gaps through economic empowerment for our women,” she promised.
Saying that sharing is growing, she told women to form groups and start table banking and merry-go-round chamas to enable them get loans from banks easily.
“Our women must rise and deflect from the narrative of the woman being viewed as kitchen keepers only,” she encouraged.
Mrs Momanyi retained her seat by beating her closest competitor Emily Nyagarama with 84,843 against 72,434 votes.
