What makes a teacher well-rounded?

It is the dream of every professional teacher to be well-rounded. No wonder teachers are increasingly becoming creative, thanks to the internet and access to social media platforms. Teachers, courtesy of their training, are revolutionizing education and even going as far as creating digital content, adding to their usual responsibilities.

Teachers are given a lot during their training. So, society equally expects and demands a lot from them.

Parents hand them learners with different entry behaviors, sometimes students who take time to encode and decode information. Yet, teachers are expected to perform miracles like those of Jesus and produce nothing but the best from such learners by the end of their learning journey.

In a bid to meet society’s expectations, a teacher applies a hybrid of teaching and learning strategies learned in college. Sometimes, they are compelled to engage a “must-do” mode when available strategies hit a snag. If not careful, teachers can become submerged in the process and forget where the balancing point is.

Personal development or self-improvement encompasses activities that develop an individual’s capabilities and potential, enhance the quality of life, and facilitate the realization of dreams and aspirations. Upon employment, any serious teacher has the aspiration to develop and enhance the quality of his or her life.

In earlier years, society expected every well-off house in the village to belong to a teacher. Teachers were the owners of rare items such as television sets, bicycles, and even suits that villagers borrowed when going to official functions. In short, teachers were masters of personal development.

A teacher who can juggle their school duties to the satisfaction of the administration and learners, while also managing their personal development, can be described as a well-rounded teacher.

Sometimes, incidents occur that force a teacher to welcome friends and the whole community into their home. In such situations, the question will be whether the teacher is a well-rounded individual, in line with what they always insist learners should be. How does the public react when there are few visible signs of personal development after a teacher has worked for decades, especially in senior job groups?

Incidents where teachers have little to show after working for many years have sometimes left those who understand what a payslip is questioning. Yes, their pay may not be that high, but personal development requires the ability to invest the little you have, manage it, and see the returns. As they struggle with school mean scores (if they still exist), teachers should also focus on improving their home mean scores, because East or West, home remains the best.
