Tomena Comprehensive School in West Pokot County has launched the Youth for Sustainable Development Charter, a major step aimed at empowering learners to become active contributors to sustainable national and global development.
The charter was officially unveiled by the school head, Peter Kemei, alongside deputy head teacher Mary Caleb Siwanyang during a ceremony attended by students and teachers at the institution.
The initiative reflects a growing shift in education toward aligning classroom learning with real-world challenges and long-term sustainability goals. It seeks to prepare learners not only for academic success but also for active participation in addressing social, economic, and environmental issues affecting society.
Speaking during the launch, Kemei said education must go beyond examinations and equip learners with practical skills, leadership abilities, and a strong sense of responsibility.
“We want our learners to become innovative, disciplined, and solution-oriented citizens capable of addressing challenges in their communities and beyond,” he said.
He noted that the charter would guide student engagement in leadership, innovation, discipline, and community service, making learning more relevant to contemporary societal needs.

Mary Caleb Siwanyang emphasized the importance of collaboration between teachers and students in implementing the charter’s objectives.
She said youth empowerment involves more than academic achievement, stressing the need to nurture character, resilience, accountability, and ethical values among learners.
“A supportive learning environment is essential in helping students realize their full potential and contribute positively to society,” she said.
The Youth for Sustainable Development Charter focuses on equipping students with competencies needed to address modern challenges such as unemployment, climate change, inequality, and rapid technological change. It also promotes innovation, creativity, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship skills aimed at preparing learners for future opportunities in an evolving global economy.
School administrators said the charter would also strengthen environmental awareness by encouraging learners to participate in conservation efforts and sustainability initiatives within their communities.
In addition, the framework seeks to reinforce values such as integrity, discipline, respect, and accountability while promoting community service and civic engagement among students.
Education stakeholders at the school described the initiative as a forward-looking model that redefines learning beyond examination performance by focusing on holistic development and active citizenship.
The launch marks a significant milestone for Tomena Comprehensive School as it positions itself to nurture a generation of socially responsible and innovative young people capable of driving meaningful change in society.
