We’ll punish errant managers, MPs warn heads of learning institutions

HEADS OF EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

A key parliamentary committee has warned managers of public learning institutions that they risk being declared incompetent if they fail to account for funds entrusted to them.

The public investments committee on Governance and Education chairman Jack Wamboka said such managers will be declared incompetent to run such institutions.

Speaking in Kisumu Wamboka said that parliament will not hesitate to punish errant managers.

Wamboka said a number of managers have no capacity to manage universities and technical and vocational colleges.

The chairman was speaking after grilling managers from a number of technical colleges and universities from the Nyanza region in Kisumu.

During the sessions, Maseno University was ordered to be placed under an inquiry after the vice chancellor Professor Julius Nyabundi failed to account for over sh 500 million.

Wamboka declared him together with the finance officer and his procurement counterpart negligent.

Other institutions were ordered to come with former holders of the institutions who have either been moved or retired to come and answer audit queries.

Wamboka said they will recommend to parliament that errant managers are done away with.

He said there must be value for money given by the government to such institutions.
