The government, through the Ministry of Education, has been asked to waive KCSE examination fees for private candidates for the remaining two years of the 8-4-4 system.
Joan Ochome, director of Pendeza Africa, an organization that has been supporting adult education in Siaya and Kisumu counties, says that registration for private candidates has remained expensive over the years.
She stated that there are many adult learners who wish to register for KCSE exams, but because they cannot raise the required Ksh 7,000 registration fees, the majority have remained at home. She added that many of them would be accommodated if the government could give a waiver for the remaining two years before the eventual closure of the 8-4-4 system.

Speaking at the Pendeza Africa centre in Kogelo village within Siaya County during a meeting to evaluate the progress of their adult education programme, Mrs Ochome revealed that the organization is currently in a rush to empower the community before the KCSE examinations come to an end.
She has, therefore, encouraged those who wish to have the KCSE certificates but haven’t had an opportunity to do so to come and register because there are only two years remaining until the close of the KCSE examinations.
Beneficiaries of Pendeza Africa’s adult education programme, led by Juliet Akinyi, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the organization, saying that it has greatly transformed their lives.
They stated that they joined the programme when they did not have any hope in life, but today, they are proud owners of businesses and professionals in various fields.
