University students have been told to aspire to become good role models for younger generations by maintaining and promoting academic integrity and honesty.

This will build the desire of those in basic education for university education.

Addressing first year students of the University of Embu, the Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Daniel Mugendi encouraged the students to work hard and resist the temptation to cheat in examinations.

“Avoid the temptation to carry unauthorized materials commonly known as mwakenyas to the examination rooms with a view to cheat,” the VC told the 3,641 first years comprising of 2,7008 for bachelor’s, 916  diploma and certificate, and 17 postgraduate programmes.

While appreciating gender balance in the university admission roll, the VC described the distribution of 1,977 male to 1,664 female students as acceptable in meeting constitutional gender balance.

Mugendi appreciated the students for deciding to seek admission to the institution, noting that it has a good reputation of producing some of the best graduates in various areas of professionalism.

“You have to be ready to embrace this opportunity, value diversity, adopt innovative thinking, and forge new friendships,” added the VC, averring that the university’s reputation for excellence in training and research needs to be protected.

The VC pointed out that despite the availability of funding for them, it was their responsibility to follow stipulated guidelines to access scholarships and tuition fee loans.

“Scholarships, loans and bursaries will be allocated according new higher education financing model, which you should be familiar with,” said Prof. Mugendi.

The students were also cautioned against indulgence in harmful substances while being reminded on the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles through balanced nutrition and regular exercises.

On mental health wellness, Prof Mugendi announced the availability of the university’s psychosocial support through counselling services.
