Varsity hopefuls to know amount of funds they’ll receive in August

Universities Funding Board Kenya CEO Geoffrey Monari has revealed that those joining varsities, TVET colleges in September will know how much funding they’ll receive from the government under the new funding formula in August.

Monari said the board is first waiting for Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS) to complete the placement process.

The board and Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) will jointly categorize the applicants into four groups of vulnerable, extremely needy, needy and less needy for apportioning of scholarships and loans.

The categorization will help families know how much they will shoulder financially for the university education of their children.

Needy students joining universities will receive government scholarships of up to a maximum of 53 per cent and loans of up to 40 per cent with their households being required to only pay the remaining seven per cent.

The government will be using a Means Testing Instrument (MTI) model where students from rich families will get more loans than scholarships and vice versa replacing the Differentiated Unit Cost (DUC) model where the rich and poor students receive the same amount.

Under the new funding formula, universities and TVET colleges will no longer receive block funding in the form of capitation.
