Varsity employees issue seven-day strike notice

Workers at Egerton University have announced a seven-day strike notice effective Wednesday, 5th October over salary dues.

The Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) Secretary General Charles Mukhwaya said the well-being of their members had been neglected for a period of three years now.

During their monthly National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Nakuru on Saturday, KUSU officials announced the strike notice to the varsity should it fail to address the matter.

“Having made all these efforts hoping the state of affairs may ameliorate to a tolerable level without success, the union now gives a seven-day strike notice effective Wednesday, October 5, to Egerton University and the government,” read a statement by the union.

The union stated that it could not continue ignoring the agony of its members who were struggling to make ends meet.

KUSU further stated that the circumstances its members work in are against the criterion set by the International Labour Organization (ILO), to which Kenya is a signatory.

“It commenced with non-payment of full salaries which gained feverpitch with the negligence to execute arranged basic salaries of the 2017-2021 CBA. When it was finally executed, it was only held in payslips as dues due to members to date,” further read the statement.

KUSU stated that the salary percentage paid to its members is a moving target depending on the employer’s change in attitude. The union claimed that it had tried to engage the university without much success.
