Vacancies in varsity councils to be filled

Ministry of education through the State Department of University Education has set 1st December 2020 as the deadline for application for public universities and constituent colleges’ council positions.

In a public notice published in the local dailies on November 24, successful candidates in the advertised positions of chairpersons and council members will be deployed to serve in any university within the country taking into account diversity in skills, regional and gender balance.

The prospective candidates for the position of the council Chairpersons must be holders of PhD degrees with proven leadership experience. On the other hand, council members must be holders of a Master’s degree as stipulated under Section 7 of the University Act. Applicants are supposed to submit their applications to the Cabinet Secretary.

According to Section 36 of the University Act 2012, the council shall consist of nine (9) persons appointed by the Cabinet Secretary who include Chairperson, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry for the time being responsible for the university education, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry for the time being responsible for Finance, five (5) members appointed by the Cabinet Secretary through an open process and the Vice-Chancellor who shall be an ex-officio member of the Council.

The key functions of the Council as stipulated under Section 35 of the same act are to employ staff in public universities and constituent colleges, approve the statutes of the University, approve the policies of the University budgets.
