Unmasked pupils return to school amid Covid-19 crisis

As physical learning in the country resumes, face mask is a mandatory requirement for the learners but that was not the case in Mwingi Primary School as pupils reported yesterday without.

Speaking to Education News, Mwingi Primary School head teacher Mr. Joseph Muthui said despite pupils being required to report to school in face mask, many of them came without and the school had to intervene and address the matter.

“We are, however, happy since the turn up was 85 percent and lessons resumed as planned. Teachers reported two weeks ago as per the government’s directive and they have been preparing to resume teaching,” said Muthui.

He called upon the parents to provide learners with face masks as directed by the Ministry of Health.

Mr. Muthui further appeals for help from well-wishers to donate face masks and other requirements to the learners citing that the institution faces challenges in complying with the Covid-19 set protocols.

Muthui lamented that if other classes reopen, the school will have a serious challenge in observing the MoH protocols since the institution lacks enough infrastructure to accommodate its population of 700 pupils.

Even as learners return to class, things do not look like they did before schools closed when the coronavirus began to spread around the world. Now, social distancing means learners and teachers wear masks and sometimes plastic shields, and the kids sit farther apart than they did before.
