University of Nairobi bags first position in East Africa

The latest Webometrics ranking has named University of Nairobi as the best public university in East Africa.

The Kenyan prestigious University is ranked tenth in the continent followed by Makerere University in Uganda at position 12 while Tanzania’s University of Dares Salaam takes 35th position. Africa has a total of 1,902 universities.

It is worth noting that University of Nairobi is the only University in East Africa that is appearing in the top 1,000 universities globally standing at position 956.

Makerere University is ranked 1,013 while Dares Salaam is 1,838 globally.

The topmost positions in the continent are dominated by South African Universities with University of Cape Town taking the first position.

Harvard University is ranked first university globally.

Kenyatta University is ranked 28, Moi University 47, JKUAT 62, Egerton 125, Strathmore 134, TUK 144 and Maseno 154 in Africa.

More than 30,000 institutions were evaluated but only 12,011 met the standards for ranking.

The rankings were done by Cybermetrics Lab, largest research group owned by Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, the largest research agency in Spain.

The institutions are ranked under the following categories; presence, openness and research.
