Two students from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) have died while 29 others sustained injuries after a bus carrying mourners was involved in a tragic road accident near Ahero in Kisumu County.
The students were travelling from Mombasa to attend the burial of former TUM student leader Elvis “Beast” Otieno when the accident occurred on Friday, August 7.
According to the university, the students had safely arrived in Kisumu, where they received the body of their late leader before the final bus carrying mourners was involved in the crash as it approached Ahero.
In a statement signed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila U. Abubakar, the university said the accident happened after the bus driver attempted to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming speeding saloon car.
The driver reportedly lost control, causing the bus to overturn.
The university confirmed that two male students lost their lives in the accident, while 29 others were injured.
The victims are receiving treatment at Lisa Hospital in Ahero and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
“It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I confirm that the Technical University of Mombasa community has suffered a tragic road accident involving a bus carrying our students to the burial of their former students’ leader,” the Vice Chancellor said in the statement.
Prof. Abubakar thanked emergency responders, medical personnel, security agencies and members of the public for their swift response in rescuing the students and providing emergency assistance.
University mourns students
She also conveyed condolences on behalf of the University Council, Senate, management, staff and students to the families of those who died.
“We mourn this immense loss together and pray that the Almighty grants the departed eternal peace while giving their families the strength and comfort to bear this heartbreaking loss,” she said.

The tragedy has cast a sombre mood over the university community, with leaders and students across the country sending messages of condolence to the bereaved families while wishing those injured a speedy recovery.
