The Ministry of Education has issued a formal statement following two separate road accidents in Nairobi and Nyeri counties that left two teachers and one learner dead, with dozens more injured.
In Nairobi City County, a grisly accident occurred outside City Primary School in Ngara, where teachers were participating in union elections organized by the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Nairobi branch
A public service vehicle rammed into a group of teachers leaving the venue, killing one on the spot and another while undergoing treatment. Twenty-six others sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention at various hospitals across the city.
In a circular signed by Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba, the ministry confirmed the Nairobi incident and expressed deep concern over the loss
“We pray for a quick recovery for those who were injured in the unfortunate accidents,” the statement read, while calling on road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules.
Meanwhile, in Nyeri County, a van ferrying 25 learners from Mahehe Friends Academy and Aberdare Academy lost control, resulting in the death of one learner and injuries to several others. The injured were rushed to hospital for treatment.
The Ministry of Education is coordinating with other government agencies and county governments to respond to both incidents.

Ogamba extended condolences to the families, friends, and relatives of the deceased, and urged the public to uphold road safety to prevent further tragedies.
In relation to this, KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori has also spoken on the Nairobi accident, confirming the fatalities and detailing the extent of injuries. Through a press release earlier this evening Misori condoled with the affected families and wished quick recovery to the injired
“One teacher was confirmed dead on the spot, and another while undergoing treatment. Up to 26 suffered injuries, and all were rushed to various hospitals around the city where they are receiving urgent medical attention,” Misori stated.
Speaking from Aga Khan Hospital in Parklands, where 13 teachers are admitted, Misori said medical teams were sparing no effort to save lives.
“The doctors and nurses are sparing no effort to save the lives of our teachers. Some are in theatre now, undergoing procedures,” he noted.
Other victims are receiving care at Kenyatta National Hospital (5), Nairobi West Hospital (3), Scholastica (2), Radiant (2), and Mater Hospital (1). Misori extended condolences to the bereaved families and assured members that despite the emergency interruption, the electoral process at City Primary School resumed and will be conducted to its logical conclusion. MoE and KUPPET have urged for vigilance among drivers and transport operators.
