Residents in Tharaka Nithi County are engulfed by sorrow after two school girls drowned in Kithino River.
Confirming the unfortunate incident, Mr. Mutegi Kimathi, a village elder said that the two girls aged 12 and 13 allegedly went swimming with their two friends after a church service when the unfortunate incident occurred.
“The two girls drowned at the deep Ndia Mathendu section of Kithino River,” he added.
The other two girls who were with them reported the incident to the villagers and by the time they got to the scene, the girls had already passed on.
The bodies were retrieved by the villagers and moved to Marimanti Level Four Hospital mortuary.
One of the girls is claimed to study at Kithino Learning Centre and the other at Kinamuthi Primary School in Grade Six and Seven respectively.
Simon Ndonco, Kithino Learning Centre Director acknowledged that one of his pupils had drowned in the river.
The incident takes place barely a month after three other primary school children drowned in Kathita River while fetching water to wash their school uniforms.
The departed children from Gakuyu Primary School in Kirukuma Sub-Location aged 13, 12 and 10 travelled several kilometres to Gituma Sub-Location to fetch water to wash their school uniforms in preparation for school reopening.
