TSC to interview 1000 diploma teachers for promotion

By Malachi Motano

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has invited 1000 Interviews For Diploma Teachers On 24th May 2021 to compete for the promotions advertised.

Already counties have invited teachers for teachers for the interview that is scheduled for next week.

“For Diploma teachers whose interview was postponed because of KNEC marking, kindly note that you are invited to attend the interview for Secondary teachers advert 2/3/4/6/2021 on 24/5/2021 or 25/5/2021 at Bishop Sulumeti Girls. Pick your letter of invitation from CDs office Kakamega on 19/5/2021 for more details on exact date, time and panel you will appear from,” reads a message sent to one Wafula George in Kakamega.

Many teachers have not moved up in terms of promotions for years for diploma teachers as compared to degree holders and this will be a huge respite for them.

“The interviews will be conducted from May 24 to May 28,” she said.

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Secretary-General Akello Misori argued that unlike teachers with degrees, diploma teachers join the service in Job Group C1 (T-Scale 6). This job group was previously called Job Group J.

Degree holders join the profession in Job Group C2 (T-Scale 7). A job grade previously known as Job Group K.

TSC started moving diploma teachers to Job Group C2 in the Career progression guidelines in the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

“For them to be promoted to Job Group C3 (T-Scale 8), they must go through an interview process,” said Mr. Misori.

The previous CBAs employed Schemes of Service which led to diploma teachers stagnating in one job group for a duration between three to six years.

“The guidelines subjected them to work in their entry position for three years before promotion, but the current progression guidelines required them to go through an interview to be moved to the next group,” said Akello Misori.
