A breakthrough has emerged in the education sector following the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) ‘s official recognition of a national framework for chess education proposed by the Robotics Society of Kenya (RSK).

The development signals a shift toward structured integration of chess into the formal school system, with strong emphasis on teacher leadership, learner safety, and alignment with the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework.

According to official correspondence, the Commission acknowledged the need for a national approach to chess in schools.

“The Teachers Service Commission acknowledges receipt of a request… for recognition of the need for a structured, teacher-led, and child-safe framework.”

This recognition underscores growing institutional support for chess as a tool for cognitive development and academic enrichment.

At the centre of this progress is the recognition of educators as key drivers of the initiative. The Commission commended teachers serving in national co-curricular leadership roles, including Shem Vilembwa Atiagaga and Fred Ondieki Sagwe.

“The Commission may recognise and commend the good work undertaken by the two proposed teachers serving in national co-curricular leadership positions.”

In a forward-looking move, the Commission further acknowledged chess coaching and coordination as part of professional growth within the education system.

Chess coaching and coordination

“Allow capacity building and upskilling of teachers… recognising chess coaching and coordination as a legitimate co-curricular professional development pathway.”

This marks a critical expansion of recognition, placing chess within formal teacher development structures and elevating its role beyond recreation.

Teachers will also be allowed to actively engage in chess activities under official school programmes, reinforcing its legitimacy in co-curricular education.

“Permit teachers to participate in chess-related training, competitions, and coordination activities as part of officially recognised school co-curricular programmes.”

However, the documents also highlight important regulatory concerns that must be addressed to sustain this progress. Authorities caution that any implementation must strictly comply with existing legal and policy frameworks.

“The implementation of a ‘Chess in Schools’ curriculum… appears to occur without formal approval from the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).”

“The conduct of Training of Trainers (TOT) workshops… without formal accreditation… presents potential regulatory non-compliance.”

“The collection of personal data of minors… raises significant compliance concerns under the Data Protection Act.”

These cautionary notes reinforce the point that, while recognition has been achieved, implementation must remain within approved structures to safeguard both teachers and learners.

In response, the Robotics Society of Kenya expressed appreciation and reaffirmed its commitment to working within national guidelines to ensure safe and effective rollout of chess programmes in schools.

“We wish to express our sincere gratitude… for acknowledging the necessity of a structured, teacher-led, and child-safe framework.”

The continued collaboration among educators, regulators, and stakeholders reflects a shared vision to transform learning through strategic thinking and innovation.
