The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has initiated a nationwide process to identify outstanding teachers and learning institutions for the prestigious Wajibika Award, aimed at promoting integrity, accountability and excellence in the education sector.

In a memo by acting CEO Evaleen Mitei and addressed to county directors, the commission said the award; an initiative of the Public Service Commission seeks to recognize educators and administrators who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to ethical standards and improved learning outcomes.

According to the directive, the selection process will be guided by performance evaluation tools, including the Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) system and performance contracting, alongside national examination results.

Teachers who have attained a TPAD score of 95 per cent and above for six consecutive terms between 2024 and 2026 have already been shortlisted as potential nominees.

The county directors have been tasked with compiling and submitting Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) performance data for the identified teachers, focusing on their best-performing subjects over a three-year period from 2023 to 2025.

Additionally, each county is required to nominate four heads of institutions:  two from secondary schools and two from primary schools who have maintained performance scores of at least 90 per cent for three consecutive years while keeping pending bills below five per cent.

The commission has also directed counties to identify one secondary and one primary school that demonstrate strong institutional governance, effective resource management, quality curriculum implementation, and a firm commitment to learner safety and welfare.

According to the preliminary reports, a total of 300 teachers, 150 from secondary schools and 150 from primary schools have met the initial criteria in each county, underscoring the competitive nature of the award.

TSC has emphasized that the exercise is part of broader efforts to enhance professionalism and accountability in the teaching service, in line with its constitutional mandate to manage and regulate the sector.

All submissions are expected to be completed and forwarded to the commission by Friday May 8, 2026 at 4:00 p.m.
