Walimu Solidarity Sacco can now allow teachers outside union leadership to join the Sacco, following approval of the long-awaited check-off system by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The system allows for direct salary deductions of member contributions, a major step forward since the Sacco previously only served union officials due to the absence of a salary deduction framework.
Sacco chairman Edward Obwocha confirmed that with the new approval, the Sacco now has the authority to recruit from the broader membership of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).

The Sacco, which currently has 750 members, is targeting rapid growth, with a potential pool of around 180,000 teachers, including new junior school teachers under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
In 2025, the TSC enrolled 39,550 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, further expanding the pool of potential Sacco members.
During the recent Annual Delegates Meeting, delegates approved a dividend payout of 20% on share capital and 16% interest on members’ deposits for the year ending December 31, 2025.
